Hi I am new to this forum although not the web site. I have been coming here since last summer when I decided now was the time to pursue adoption.
Briefly I am single and British (but we Brits don't make many web sites! We rely on our American friends!! :) ). I am living and working in Slovakia and began the adoption process here in September 06. It counts as a domestic adoption as I have residency as I am working here. Today I had my home study and all went well.
Adoption by foreigners is rare here but not unheard of. I would like to get in touch with anyone who has gone through the process, especially regarding the 28 hour/3 month psychological/parenting assessment and course. Also any recommendations regarding doctors. Social worker has told me that they tend to have very limited info on birth mother's health and habits, and tend to have nothing on father. Are there any particular signs to look for regarding fetal alcohol/drug effects in a child under 12 months?
Also, when you get the match how do you 'know'? Social worker assures me you do, as do all the case studies - but how? I have no doubts about adopting. But an awful lot about my ability to be a single parent. What if I am not good enough? Anyone with any words of wisdom - it would be appreciated!
