I'm really curious about this. An aquaintance of mine adopted from the U.S. three times. The first time she did the traditional route - paid a ton. The second and third time, they did it "on their own" and saved a bundle. It seems to me they paid less than 5 thousand per adoption. I was just wondering if anyone else found a less expensive way to adopt an infant through the U.S.
I'm curious which steps you can skip and which are required.

Well, we were adopting through an agency and the new Hague rules have ousted us out completely, so tread VERY carefully. PGMs can still find their own matches but there is a 60 day waiting period when the attempt must be made to place the child in the home country and it is now in effect.

Is that the case when it is a private direct placement as well? Like, say the birthmom says "I WANT XXX TO ADOPT MY CHILD"
