Had a friend ask me this the other day and I didn't have an answer. Is it acceptable to use the term afro or fro to describe a hairstyle? When I leave my daughter's hair down (but groomed), I've always called it loose or free. Don't know why - I just do. So is afro or fro okay or not??
it depends on how long the hair is and how it has been processed- an afro is generally shorter hair that has not been chemically treated to straighten it.
Once it has been chemically treated to straighten it then it's called a perm

Afro/fro is a hair style, and doesn't have a negative connotation. But it may not describe your daughter's hair if it's combed down and not combed out from the head.
Thanks! I usually do her hair in twists, braids or ponies. But I really like the look of it all combed out - just doesn't last long! Just checking to see if afro/fro was the term to use.
