Hello. My husband and I have a sweet little boy adopted from Guatemala who is two and a half and I want one more child. My husband is not completely on board yet but I have started researching foster and adoption programs through the state for when he is ready to move forward. If you wanted to foster and then eventually adopt a child that becomes available what would you do? Would you just foster or go straight to the adoption program? I do want to adopt another child eventually but not necessarily right now. In the mean time I almost think we should foster for a while. We can help some children until we are ready to adopt again. Also if one of the foster children become available we could then adopt. I am open to a child up to age seven and really would like a preschool or school age child. I could only take one child at a time since we do both work full time. Any recommendations out there? I know we need to start the MAPP classes and get the homestudy done. Also I hate to ask but what type of financial help are you given while you foster. Also what are the chances of getting a child that does not have alot of physical or mental issues. We are open to any race I just have to consider my son so I am worried about a child that does have significant problems.

If you want a younger child, I would definitely say go the foster care route first...many kids become available for adoption through foster care...However you must remember that the first goal is ALMOST ALWAYS reunitification.
In my county we receive $15/day per child..But for teens you get $17/day
They also get free medical through medicaid
WIC (Which helps out a lot, especially if you have an infant and don't want to purchase expensive formula
You also get a clothing allowance once a year , but the rules about that vary from county to county (or so I here)
My children have absolutely no significant physical or mental issues....From what I've been told there are 3 types of foster homes....
- Regular where you get kids with little to no (pre-diagnosed) issues.
- Thereaputic (sp?) Where you get kids with major emotional, psychological or behavioral problems
- and Medical - self explanatory
You have to have special training for the two latter types of foster homes, so they won't normally knowingly place kids with you who need to be in these types of homes unless you are licensed as one...
....and even if you are a regular foster home you can specify what types of children, ages and issues you will allow
