Geesh. there's too much to worry about w/ foods! How much, what is really the best type of diet for a toddler, fats, sodium, sugars...... But it's been great for me! Question - we delayed many things, hoping to avoid food allergies. Peanut butter is a no no for us until some time after 3 or later. Anyone know much about soy butter? If it would have any potential allergens that would make it wise to delay? Or if it has good nutritional value? I'm getting ready to do a websearch, but thought I'd check out the REAL mom experts here! He'll eat "hummus" sandwiches. Maybe soybutter would be something fun for him... I just thought it might be a nice alternative to use. We also need to get some more protein in, as babe won't eat much meat or eggs.

My only thinking about the soy being okay is that it is IN EVERYTHING!!!! I noticed it was in some chicken broth I used last night! And since A's little baby cousin was diagnosed w/ nasty allergies and her mom (who is nursing) must avoid soy, we've realized how much it is used in. So he's been exposed to that a lot already (in some grain products, other foods where it's hidden)... With no known reaction, unless that's what his mild eczema is linked to. It's awfully hard to eliminate it totally (ask McNally!), but maybe I should continue just to keep it at the absolute minimum... There are no known allergies in his birth family's medical history, but there's also very little history, which has made me leery....
Storkwatcher, I think I read somewhere that a lot of the "nut" allergies are not from foods, but from lotions that contain nut butters, etc. But hummus seems to be a good protein substitute if you want to wait (I love it when DD asks for "hummus" -- she says it so funny)...I'm not sure about soy butter.
Don't forget that you can also combine starches with other foods to get a complete protein---black beans and rice, noodles with peas or vegetable sauce (it's really easy to puree zucchini and stick it in almost anything) If you haven't seen a reaction to the soy yet, you're probably OK, but Jenna's right about it being a top allergen. Of course, my real reason for not giving soy butter to H is that I think it is completely disgusting. :) Slightly OT: I gave H a piece of my apple slice w/ pb on it the other day. He licked it, said "YUCKY." then handed it back to me, saying "Mama eat." Thanks, kiddo.
