I don't know how many of you have heard about this movie coming out in December. It is based on books written by Phillip Pullman, who is a "proud" atheist.
The books have children killing God and doing whatever they want.
You can read more about it on snopes here.
I personally will not be supporting this movie!
Yes, you are right, I believe it is what I said prior...its called a discussion, or debate.. so in that venue.. I can say my POV. I do get what you are saying, about blindly making judgement, I think many do this, Christian or otherwise. However, I am speaking in general, and always appreciate another point of view. They as in who? my beliefs has nothing to do with who is in public office at present.
I spent a lot of times as a youngster, reading the Hobbit series, at least one of C.S. Lewis books, and various book of the Fantasy genre.. as well as many other genre. Big ds if he wants at eleven, and a very mature one at that.. is free to read as well, my little one, not yet. Censorship is one thing in a home, another in public, and I do not condone that, since I feel as the parent, Dh and I am/and will do my job.

I don't want to shut people down from having their views.
I just want to make sure things are accurate.
Again, OSC comes to mind. There's tons of things he states that are inaccurate. Free speech also means the freedom to point out that "other" side may not have the whole picture. (Especially when one has read that series as many times as I have. I love that series, and why are these folks worrying about the movie? I am the one who should be worried. They are ruining it. They are going to cut out every good thing in the book, probably due in part to folks griping about it. arg! So unfair...I bet they didn't cut Narnia like that. That wasn't a bad movie, but it isn't different from all the toehr kids go to a magic world and become warriors thing, but I am dismayed that they never got married in that story as adults in that world, why?)

My whole point is that even if things are inaccurate and they cut parts of the movie out I still do not want my kids seeing it. I do not like someone telling me that I am wrong in making this choice which is how I feel you are trying to do here. I am making a choice as A PARENT that I feel is best for MY family, not yours. Yet you are still coming on here and saying how he didn't mean this, or he didn't mean that. I really do not think that it is fair to those of us who have done the research and made the decision not to. Our choices do not affect you so why do you keep coming back and trying to change our minds? BTW, just to clarify something you said, they did cut many parts out of Narnia. It is just what they do when they make a book into a movie. The same thing happened to Harry Potter. It has nothing to do with the views of the public, they just get the main parts of the story in to make the movie.
OK, I'm opening this can of worms again!
There is an article from my preacher in this coming Sunday's bulletin about this movie. He will be running articles in the paper in the next few weaks about it, and how damaging it can be. He will be using Biblical back up for his reasoning. I am looking forward to reading it!
How damaging it can be?
There's books that tell people how to hit children without leaving bruises and this is what they are complaining about? Can't they put their energy towards stopping people like that?
Even some group of Catholic bishops like the book and movie.
This person is Christian and seems to understand the point of the story. God in the dust - The Boston Globe

Synthesthesia, yes, how damaging the books can be, and yes he has read every one of them.

Just because it's a book by an atheist doesn't mean it's damaging or that it's about destroying Christianity. I've read books by folks who consider themselve Christain that are so much more damaging. Books that advocate being cruel and uncompassionate towards children.
Where's the outrage about things like that? Stuff like that has been historically shown to do real lasting damage to children.
Urg. I am so annoyed. He's totally misrepresenting the book altogether...
I've stayed out of the debate because I haven't read the book. I got it and tried, but that type of fantasy genre isn't something I like to read (I'll watch the movies and enjoy them, but reading it...ugh! lol!) I did ask my dh to read it though and he's almost done. So far he's enjoyed it and feels that it's not the work of the devil as I've heard some groups describe it as. Thinks that overall, the msg in the book is corruption of organized power (that could be translated to any kind of power that ends up being used for evil instead of good), and how they fight against that corruption. He says the heroine of the book isn't necessarily liked by everyone even those fighting on the same side as her against the powers that be. How true that is in real life, when I think about it, so in that regard, I like the msg.
I think we'll all go with our own decisions when it comes to literature and all sides will have the points that they agree or disagree with that make it okay or not okay for themselves and children. I will allow my kids to see the movie and take the opportunity to discuss things with them.
I believe in God and I do want my kids to have a strong base of what I consider to be right and moral. They'll have their own opinions on things of course, and hopefully they'll give my opinions some thought.
I kind of compare this to other things I've read, for example things on the Holocaust. A lot of my friends don't agree with me in educating my kids at their young ages on this part of history, but I do it because I feel it's important to teach them early on about hate and how it grows. I do the same thing with teachings of Jesus...how being different and the fear from others makes them turn to evil and hatred. How important it is to stand up for what you feel is right and how hard it can be to live by your beliefs. I'll translate all that with current issues,(gay rights, racism, freedom of religion, speech etc.) and hope that one of my main morals I'm raising my kids with is acceptance. Maybe it'll backfire, I don't know...lol.
So I may not agree with some of the groups against this book, but I accept their right to be against it. Which really is the msg. I see from all sides here...this is my belief and this is yours..we do what's best for us.:)
That's a good message.
Sorry to sound snarky, unemployment is making me cranky. Along with reading various blogs about newborn CIO...And these other books that frustrate me and make me mad.
I agree with Crick. I've stayed out because I haven't read the book at issue and I refuse to pass judgement until I've personally read/seen whatever is at issue.
I won't dismiss it all out of hand because the author is an atheist or because of any articles written by third parties.
So once I read the book I'll form an opinion. I do really enjoy that genre and have actually picked the book up a couple of times before but never bought it.

Ultimately -- whatever your beliefs -- the movie is rated PG13 -- I have a 5 and 7 year old so we won't be seeing it either way. Although, after reading this thread I'll probably go buy the book. Want to see what the fuss is about . . .
Hmmmm...seems like the MAY have been the whole idea the author was trying to accomplish...stir up controversy, get everyone to go buy the book. If so, it appears to be working.
It's free PR. The author, publisher, etc. would be crazy not to stir it up and/or add to it.
And it does always work no matter the intentions of the pro and con camps.

True - look at the Davinci code - it got tons of PR....
Oh absolutely!! I never heard of it til awhile ago, so no doubt about it.
I don't think Dan Brown's books would have sold so much without the controversy, Mel Gibson's "Passions", etc.
Interesting side topic there...:)
Posted at the same time as love...sorry!:)
