There is a thread on the Guat Forum http://forums.adoption.com/guatemala-adoption/320030-what-do-you-think-about.html and a mini debate on whether letting your child believe in Santa is "lying" or not. I was wondering how an adoptee feels about this.

I am an adult adoptee ... and not only did my parents encourage me to believe in Santa but I also gave my children the gift of believing in Santa. I have never understood the issue of "lying" concerrning Santa, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy. To me they were never lies but ways to understand love in action. When people give money and gifts to others that they do not know, when men dress in Santa suits and listen to little children tell their dreams, when a child's face lights up as they put cookies by the fireplace and dream of Santa - what is the harm. When you are a child, magic is all around ... and, maybe, if you are very lucky - you get to keep some of that when you grow up.
I hate lying when it can hurt someone or lead someone to base their lives on a lie or a secret. But, to me anyway, Believing in Santa is believing in love - and how is that lying.
