I was just looking at the list of foreign films nominated for oscars, and among them is a film called "Mongol," about Ghengia Khan. It was filmed in Kazakhstan. It's the first of a trilogy of movies about Ghengis Khan.
I am a Netflix member and I went on their website to see what I could learn. Everything about it is positive. It was filmed in Kazakhstan.
On Netflix it says it's not available yet. Hopefully soon. I would love to see this.
For those unfamiliar with Kazakhstan history, it has been part of the Great Silk Road, connecting Europe and China, for centuries. The Kazakhs are actually over 120 different tribes, and the Mongols are one tribe. Russia didn't come into the picture until the mid 19th century, and now a lot of Russians are leaving the country, since the president is Kazakh.
My son is clearly mixed Russian and Kazakh heritage so I find this particularly fascinating for that reason.
Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone is interested, or has more informaiton about this film.

Yes, this film got great reviews and was nominated for some European awards when it was first released. I'm glad to hear that its been released, I've been waiting to see it. One thing to keep in mind, it was entirely funded by the Kaz government, I think it cost something silly like 40 million dollars.

Thank you for sharing. I was looking at the Oscars and saw it and was fascinated but forgot about it. I am going to look for the film. My daughter is from Inner Mongolia.
