[FONT="Comic Sans MS"]anyone could give me some advice. This is long but I really wanted to tell my whole story so you have a good understanding of my situation.
I am 29 yo and have been married to my DH for 10 years we have 3 children ages 15,10, & 7 (I consider them all my kids but my bios are 10 & 7). We really want to foster to adopt here in Florida.
The concern I have, is that we both have heart conditions. My DH has a congenital hear condition that he has had 4 open heart surgeries to repair. All surgeries have been successful. None of them were life saving type of procedures just valve replacements. He has never been on disability or anything he works everyday. i developed peripartum cardiomyopathy during my pregnany with my 7 yo and thus had my tubes tied because it could be life threatning to try and carry another baby.
I have one move semester to go until I graduate as a Registered Nurse. I am also able to work (no disability although I do still have cardiomyopathy) My doctor released me physically for the Nursing program.
My husband and I knew from the very beginning that fostering could be a possibility. His parents fostered for many years here in Florida and My MIL taught MAPP classes. I was actually in the foster care system as a child. So I think we have alot to offer by know how it feels from both sides. My MIL thinks we will be able to foster but left her job with the state about 1 1/2 years ago and dont really know if things have changed. Again Sorry for such a long post and thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it.
With all of this said what are our chances?

Here in Florida you'll have to get a physical and the doctor will give his recommendations and report for your home study. I think you should go for it and see what the agency says. I'm sure since you are saying it's not life threatening and he's working and you are too that there may be no problems. But that again depends upon the agency and nobody can really say what they will recommend.
I wish you luck! I say start the process!

Thanks for the reply. I do think we are going to go for it. The earliest we can do it would be December. We are going to start getting things in order now. I am really excited! :thanks:
When you take the MAPP classes, they will require to have a dr. sign off on medical information. As long as your Dr's feel you are healthy enough to foster children you should have no issues. I suggest just being upfront with the workers when going to MAPP let them know this is what the situation is and I"m sure all will be fine. It's not like you are on chemo and constantly ill.
I say go for it. Someone like you who has been a foster child can share something with the kids that I can't. You might be good for a medically needy child, (only if that's what you want to do).
Good Luck. Let us know, how everything goes.
Sorry, just read your last post. Why don't they have classes until December? That seems so long away. I know with us, we checked within our district and the classes were offered in neighborhing counties, we did have to drive like 30 minutes but we got it done a lot faster than had we did it in our county.
I am sorry for the confusion. The Mapp classes start monthly in my area. What I meant was I graduate from college as a Registerd Nurse in December. I start back in Aug and finish up in December. The RN program is so stressful and as much as I want to start fostering right now I just can give myself completely to a child(ren) right now and be fair to my own. I am a SAHM right now and when I graduate I plan to work 2 days per week as a nurse and stay home the rest of the week. Thanks for the responses.

Oh ok, makes sense, you can start the licensing process, it typically takes around 6 months before actually being licensed. I completely understand though if you decide to wait.
Good Luck.
Where are you at? I took MAPP in Ormond Beach/Volusia County and they are offered every other month. I loved the place I took the classes because we went Thursday night, Fri. night and all day Saturday for two weeks and knocked them out.
PM me and I'll send you the info on where to take the classes.
We took the "fast track" classes several years ago and it still took us 6 months to get licensed!! The "system" moves slower now than it used to with the extra layer of red tape to get thru. In our county they send us our relicensing packets 6 months before renewal time!! We'd only been licensed 6 months when we got our first renewal!
Anyhow, welcome to the fold!! You are necessary and very much needed. Our future depends on people stepping up now!!
God Bless
I'm not in your state so don't know if this will help you or not. But I have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy plus a year ago I had a defibulator/pacemaker installed. It is only a precaution so if my heart needs it I have it there it has never been used in the year I've had it. I didn't have any problems getting through the physical aspect my doctor signed of no problem and even though I included all the info with our homestudy no one ever asked about it or questioned it in anyway.
