My sister just got a letter from her DD's birthfather (we both adopted DDs and are in open/direct relationships with their birthmoms but not birthdads). Anyway, her DD's birthmom is about to go away to college and up to this point, Bdad has received all his info through Bmom as they are childhood friends. Well, the letter said that they'd (Bdad and his mom) like to get info directly and gave phone numbers and addresses. So, my sister called and spoke to Bdad's mom, saying of course she'd LOVE to have direct contact and as much as they want - they'd like to fly out to visit so they can see DD.
Well, come to find out, the Bdad and his mom sent a letter 2 years ago (DD is 3) and my sister was moving to their new house and never got it! They waited all this time to send another letter, probably thinking that my sister didn't want contact. She just broke down in tears on the phone with DD's bgrandma and is so sad thinking of the 2 years they lost - even though they DID get the pictures and updates through Bmom, just not directly and no visits. I'm so glad they are connected now, and SO glad they didn't give up!
A) I am so glad that they got in touch with one another. I can only imagine the general "ick" the birth father's family must have felt over those two years. It must have taken a lot for him/them to speak up. Kudos for everyone for communicating!
B) Thank you for sharing this for various reasons. Some biological fathers are given bad reps because of other biological fathers. Some really do want to be involved in open adoptions. I think it's great when stories like these are shared; they give hope to families. :)
