I have elementary age kids 3rd-6th grades and I've been really surprised how much is discussed at school regarding the election and both candidates. Obviously a lot that is said are kids parrotting things their parents say, but it also has raised a lot of questions and concerns too that they discuss.
We are pretty open about the election and our views at home but do try to say too that not everyone thinks the same way or agrees and that being in disagreement doesn't mean there has to be disrespect. Truly amazing though how some parents don't seem to be doing this and some of the things I've heard from my kids are just ridiculous. (i.e. You are stupid if you'd vote for xx, xx hates kids, donuts, whatever else that is just totally incorrect)
I've also had discussions with my kids that I really wasn't prepared to have with them at their ages. One being abortion and the other being the mudslinging ads/t.v. etc. & satire. In depth discussion of these topics are difficult to explain to a kid, imo and it's been interesting if not very tiring!
How are you all doing with discussing this stuff with your kids?
