For the single dads out there,
How do the states and most businesses handle FMLA for single adoptive fathers? It'll be two or three years before I'm ready, but I was reading another thread and a lady said her job in social services gives her up to 12 weeks. I'm wondering if that leave is specific to only women.
I'll be working in a government field (hopefully as a parole or probation officer...or maybe as a teacher).
I realize it probably varies state to state and organization to organization...but what do you guys get?

I'm not a male but FMLA applies to both men and women....it's not gender specific...here is a link that explains FMLA:flower:

This is from the Dept of Labor web site
"Family and Medical Leave Act
Overview
Covered employers must grant an eligible employee up to a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for one or more of the following reasons:
for the birth and care of the newborn child of the employee;
for placement with the employee of a son or daughter for adoption or foster care;
to care for an immediate family member (spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or
to take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition. " So your only question will be is if you are covered by FMLA. My employer requires me to have used all available vacation and sick days prior to requesting FMLA leave which is without pay as noted above. The twelve weeks are within a twelve month period.
Very luck my husband got 12 weeks with all my kids. My first child was adopted and so he took the first 12 weeks so I could accumlate more time off while he was at home with our DS. It shouldn't be a problem but something to ask or inquire about when looking for a job in your new life. Totally support men adopting and wish you the best. Just a thought you could also always try private while pursing other options like you have talked about you never know why or who an emom will pick.
