Has anyone on this board been through a contested adoption in virginia? Heres the situation. Birthmom was a friend of a relative and asked me about adoption because she could not care for another child. She was unsure of the birthfather. Child was born 7/1/08 and released from the hospital to me. In August the birthfather came forward and wanted a DNA Test which was done and he is the birthfather. The child has been with me the whole time and he has only seen her once and that was the beggining of August when I met im at a McDonalds. We go to court on 2/24 for the contested hearing and he is stating he wants his child, not a stranger raising her. He has a record to include possesion of marijuana, DUI and a felony assault charge where he threw the birthmother out of a car while she was a few months pregnant. I am so stresses and court is coming up and I was just looking to see if anyone else has been through a similar situation or scenario

You mentioned an upcoming court date. Do you have representation? If not, I'd consider a lawyer who specializes in adoption or family law. I don't have any experience in this, but I'll be keeping you in my thoughts!

your family law attorney shoudl be familiar with what is requried of publishing information and the putative father registry. If everything was done right, and in the proper timeframes, you will be better off. Don't knwo if the adoption has been finalized or what TPR laws are in your state.
I recently hired a new lawyer who has more trial expereience that the attorney I started this process with. Thank You!
My attorney gave the bf a timeframe to register on the putative father registry and to contest and he did it all on the very last day.
Doesn't the putative father registry need to be filed by 30 days after the child's birth? And this child was born last July? Did you already file your Petition for Adoption? (that was big in our case, we had already filed b4 bio father filed his motion to contest the adoption). Or is your child already finalized? I'm a bit confused.
