We adopted from foster care two years ago. We have an open adoption agreement which requires two letters with pictures and two visits per year.
I need to write the next update letter and I always get stuck. What do I include? How long should it be? What makes a good letter?
It is partly complicated for me because our son's first mom has cognitive delays from a childhood head injury so I am always worried about writing too long or over her head.
Do you just talk about major events? We went on vacation to . . . . T started horse back riding lessons this summer . . .
What makes a good update letter?
I would love to hear from all sides of the triad - First moms - what do you like to hear? Amoms - what do you include? Adoptees - what would you want to be included?
Help!
c.a., I adopted domestically thru an agency. My dd is four and a half and I think I have written about 20 plus updates and pix.
Mine are usually a typed full page (single space). I try to include about 15 or so pix (we have gone overboard on the number of pix we take in general!).
I usually describe developmental milestones, funny stories, etc. I include pretty much everything I can remember!
I know that dd's b parents really cherish the updates, but even more so the pix. I think of it as sort of a "brag book" that I would send my mom (if she lived far away!). I used to overthink it a bit, but it becomes easier with time. Gl!
