Hi,
I've recently been looking into international adoption, but that process has become much more difficult in recent years, especially for singles. I would like to adopt an infant or possibly a toddler.
I've actually never really considered domestic (non-foster) much because I didn't think it was a realistic option. I'm worried that while it is allowed I may end up paying an agency a lot of money then spending 4-5 years waiting without a match. I'm just assuming that it is unlikely for someone to choose a single women for a match when there are so many couples waiting as well.
Is this a realistic guess at how the system works?
Has anyone been able to adopt a healthy infant this way? Most adoption agencies on their websites don't even mention single's adopting. If anyone knows of any good agency's that welcome singles please PM me.
Actually, this is the same reason I'm not really looking at foster-care adoption. In my state there are plenty of families willing to adopt healthy children under 2.

Yes, Domestic infant adoption is a realistic option for a single person. Because of the need for parents, some agencies accept singles in their AA/biracial program. I adopted my daughter four years ago through this route. The time between homestudy completion and placement was less than three months. Try calling some agencies in your area. Being single makes it a little harder to find an agency but it's definitely possible.

I just wanted to echo SavannahGirl. Also, don't buy into the notion that you won't be selected based on your marital status. As a single woman I was selected over many married couples. My agency was a little surprised, but it happens. My healthy (and might I add, gorgeous) DD came home when she was 3 wks old.
Hi - I adopted three healthy girls as newborns. It is very doable. I adopted once through the state, once independently and one through an agency. Call the agencies you like and ask them how many single parent adoptions they have done in the past year - not if they accept singles. If you are open to biracial or AA babies there are more options available. But it is definitely doable. Infant adoption through the state really varies by state and even county so give them a call and find out what they say about singles and the types of adoptions they have been doing.
