Completely OT - gardening vs. squirrels

I have many squirrels in my yard too. I also have a garden with tomatoes, many varieties of peppers, beets, carrots, spinach, cabbage, cucumbers, strawberries, green beans and many kinds of herbs(thyme, oregano, sage, cilantro, parsley, basil and dill). They have never bothered my garden. Now on the other hand we occasionally have rabbits that will eat my plants. Especially this year my pepper plants have not done so well because of the rabbits. Of course we also have a dog that tends to keep the squirrels at bay too. Concerning herbs I have read that they help keep ants away from other plants and it works to a certain extent but not completly. But keeping squirrels away....never heard of it. But hey it's worth a try. My boys have really gotten into gardening this year especially my 9 year old. It's fun to see the enthusiasm that he has each day to check on the garden and are they growing. Good luck on your garden and hope to hear how it continues to grow. Michelle

Last year the squirrels got EVERYTHING. So this year I did some things different and basically they don't have access to the garden. Today I planeted a bunch of things in pots - flowers, herbs, and onions. I read that onions keep them away. And then I covered them all with chickenwire so the squirrels can't get them while they're growing. I know it's late in the season to be planting these things, so we'll just see what happens. The kids like to see things grow and they love watching the squirrels and birds so we have feeders for them... We'll see :) GOOD to know about the herbs helping with ants :)

Because we have a dog we also had to add a fence to keep her from running through the garden. That too would keep other animals from getting into the garden. Not sure where you live but its never to late as long as you have a late fall. I kind of killed a few of my tomatoe plants recently and was not happy. So I just planted a few more to replace what I killed. It just means that I will spread out my produce from my garden longer. Just like you.:banana: Continued support and good luck! Those crazy squirrles! I don't seem to have a problem with them eating my veggies. However, I did have one bury a walnut in my yard which grew into a tree. I thought "cool, a walnut tree!" Last year, to my surprise, I actually got walnuts growing on it and thought "cool, I'll have home-grown walnuts!" WRONG..... The squirrels (probably the ringleader was the one who buried the walnut that turned into the tree) ate EVERY. SINGLE. WALNUT. I didn't get a chance to try even one. They pulled them off before they were even fully ripened!!

JustPeachy....We too have a walnut tree in our back yard and we never see a walnut. The squirrels eat every single one of them. Watching a squirell eat a walnut is amazing....they are fast. Those pesky squirrels!!!

You can buy a net to put over the tree, to keep those pesky fluffy tailed rats away..
