i thought that you had to travel to ukraine to get a referral. but i see on some sites that people are matched with children they are hoping to bring home before they even travel. how is that possible? i'm just curious. :)

I think sometimes unofficial matching goes on before travel, but technically it isn't supposed to be done. Nothing is secure at all until you've gone to Ukraine, met with the SDA (or whatever they're called now), met the child and then had a succesful court date.
My parents knew of my brother and sister before they went to Ukraine last year, but that was it. Nothing was guaranteed for them. They still had to go through the same process as everyone else. Wait for an SDA appointment, travel, meet with the SDA, court, bonding time, waiting and waiting, etc.
