I don't know where to begin. I was born on February 12, 1963 in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the old Mercy Hospital (it was burned down sometime in the 70's). Not sure if my records are burned or even recorded because my story is complicated and I even checked the newspaper but nothing also my birth certificate showed my adoptions' parents name so no information on my birth parents except according to my adoption mother said that my birth mother died of lukemia many years ago and that she was 15 years old when I was born. My birth father, no idea. I guess it may not help much but at least its a start.
KMiller,
Welcome to the forums.
Adoptions from your era (and mine) commonly had misinformation. Birthdays were changed and just about anything else including mothers being told their child had died. Always be prepared for things to not be quite what they have told you they are until you see actual proof, like a death certificate.
Iowa is a closed records state. Your original birth certificate requires a judge to open your adoption records and they only do it for 'good cause' and it also depends on the judge you get and his/her personal views and the mood they are in. You can try but don't get your hopes up. The birth certificate you have now is an amended birth certificate.
What you can do though is request your non-id info (ask for copies of everything they have) from the state as well as sign a request for contact with the state registry. The following link to another page on this site will give you the details.

There is a registry on this site where you can post your search. G's adoption registry is another reliable free registry and ISRR another good place.
Good luck,
Dickons
