My wife and I received our I-797c "notice of action" regarding our I-600 form. I attempted to call to check on the status today and entered the 10-digit receipt number, but was told that I did not enter enough numbers. When I added the 3 digit prefix, it told me it was an invalid prefix (SIM). I also attempted it online and was not able to get any information. In fact, I cannot find anything on the USCIS website about the SIM prefix.
Part of the reason for trying to figure this out ASAP is our social worker is hoping to escort our little girl home soon as she is currently in country. Any idea what the "SIM" prefix means or how I can get this figured out?
Thanks
dockanz, were you ever able to find out anything from USCIS? Our 797C came back with a receipt number that started with "SIM" also. Have been unable to get status either via phone or online.

In general, the USCIS prefers to hear from agencies, not individuals. Get your homestudy agency or placement agency to make the call. The agency should be able to get through by phone, with or without using the number. Most good agencies have phone numbers and email addresses they can use to reach knowledgeable people.

Sharon, thanks for the tip! :thanks: I'll see what we can find out this week.
I spoke with a USCIS agent a bit earlier tonight (called 800 number on I797c, then selected menu # for status, and then menu # for "lost receipt number"), they told me how to get status on the case (email local office) but was unsure as to why I couldn't get status via the automated customer service line or website. :grr:
Okay, the prefix "SIM" means things are being handled by a sub-office and not a service center. As such, you'll be unable to check status online or via automated telephone system. If you call the national customer service number, an agent will direct you how to get status.
