Hello,Just wondering how many of you accepted referrals of children with FAS. I didn't think this was too big a problem in Poland but our agency said it's seen in about 50% of cases. I'm just not familiar with the long term effects it may have. We had to recently turn a referral down, not so much because of the FAS, but other medical issues we weren't prepared to handle. thanks for your info

Our referral said possibility of alcohol abuse by mother, but none documented. Exhibits no physical traists OR personality traits. We just had an MRI done for other reasons and it doesn't show FAS type damage. We also don't see the personality traits.
So there was a risk, we were prepared to deal with it when accepting the referral, and we may still see some impact as she grows up. But, so far the neglect issues seem to be the bigger issue.
Good luck. Interestingly, all medical information we were given was very accurate. Even if they didn't have an official diagnosis, they explained the impacts to her which were spot on and gave the doctors and us somewhere to start. We have literally had no surprises.
This seems unusual because the international doctor we hired to review the reports disagreed with the orphanage director and painted a much more medically challenging picture. One that we weren't prepared to handle.
After talking to other people that had adopted from the orphanage and how the medical information presented had held up we decided to go forward. This is a risk I can't recommend anyone take, but we did.
