I am curious-we finalized my sons adoption in october and we had a bbq with all of our close friends and family-in the future we would like to do something small but special to commemorate this day-i was wondering if and what others do each year-thanks :)
We don't do much, we do go out to dinner and we talk about that child's coming home. (we do the day they came home instead of the day they were finalized because when they came home is when they met thier new sibs and we bacame a family) I know some people do it up big almost like a second birthday, but because I also have bio kids that would not be fair to them.

We are going to Disney to celebrate finalizing.
As far as the future, I am with the other poster. We will celebrate the day they joined the family rather than the day the judge signed the paper. Probably dinner or an outing that they choose (bowling, skating, movies) Maybe cook their favorite meal (red beans and rice with sausage) and go out for ice cream. It doesn't have to be big, just acknowledge that day as special.
I know that I am planning this way in advance, but I feel confident that we will do this:
We live 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. A few years ago on one of our wedding anniversaries, we had our beach portrait down. The photogragher, who is amazingly gifted and has a heart for adoption offered to do a beach portfolio of us as a family to celebrate the new union when the time comes.
i am sure we will do come 'fun kid things' too, but the portrait will have a lasting, visual reminder in our home. :D
My saying is, "Every day with DD is a gift." So, I take that to heart and Celebrate the day she came home from the hospital AND Celebrate the day I finalized.
We just Celebrate our 1 year Anniversary of the Adoption back in November. My daughter was 22 months at the time. I took her to a short play (101 Dalmatians) at a community theater. We had her favorite meal (McDonalds) and spent some quality Mommy - Daughter time at the park.
On January 22nd, we Celebrated the 2nd Anniversary of DD coming home from the hospital. I picked her up early from daycare and we spent some important Mother - Daughter time together. Then we had cake to Celebrate after dinner.
thanks for the great ideas everyone-i think that every year we will probably just do something a little special for him so that he knows how happy we are that he is here!

we're still waiting for that final adoption day, but as a family we've been talking about how to celebrate it. The sibs we're adopting are 9 and 10 so they have a lot of say in it. Most likely though it will only be our immediate family with maybe something later for extended and friends

Thats our plan as well. Given the logistics of the cross country road trip and the uncertainty of the court date, we've scheduled the trip for 4 weeks after the requested court date
That should be enough of a buffer given we already have the TPR, the OA, and all paperwork in
That said, we've alerted everyone involved - CWs, CAs, dcyf of our intent.
I booked the return flight (we're driving one way) in her new name.
I'm sticking with the power of positive thinking

We did the same thing. Turns out, the CW and the attorney are rushing paperwork to try and meet our disney deadline!!! I didn't plan it that way, but hey, if planning a vacation makes the process go faster that's great!
We figured whether we finalize before or after the trip, the kids will still know that we are celebrating them officially joining the family, and that's what matters.
Hope ya'll have a great trip!!

P and I started a tradition that I plan to do each year. I did it a month after she came and then on her anniversary in December. We go to a local shopping area and go to The Children's Place and Justice and buy an outfit right of the rack and walk down to Portrait Innovations and she gets to get her picture taken. Both times the pictures were great, she loves to be pampered and I have nice memories on the wall. It is has been so much fun to see what she picks out for her picture. Now if I could only stick to the 9.99 package!!
