Anyone have any advice on how to keep your elementary school age children occupied on unevexpected days off.
I keep some craft projects/kits and some movies put away just for those days. For the younger group, a box or two of theme things. One box could contain things for a hike/picnic, another box birthday with decorations/party favors and you could act out Alice in Wonderland "Unbirthday" party., one box could be maps, fake passports, and they could plan a trip. etc Just think of what you have around the house that you could use to pack up a box or two.

I keep a list of chores for them to do. When ever they say they are bored, I give them a chore. We always have animals to take care of, wood to stack, stalls to muck, snow to move. It's a win win situation for me. Either I get a lot of things done, or the kids manage to entertain themselves.
My kids play in the snow, build snowmen, go sledding, make yellow snow;), come in for hot chocolate, movie, charades, board games etc.
Making forts is a favorite stuck indoors pastime. Sheets, couch cushions etc. and they just have a ball.
We do some chores too and we also do worksheets or play Jeopardy, "Where am I?" (geography game), and other fun but educational things if out of school for days.
