We are a homeschool family in Texas and we just received our 3rd adoptive placement in December. C is a very smart 6 y/o boy in Kindergarten and we are being forced to educate him in the local public school (or a private school, if we choose) until finalization (hopefully in June).
We understood that going in, but I must say that this Kindergarten class is the world's biggest waste of time. The only thing he's learning there is bad behavior, as reported by the teacher almost daily. She said he's by far not the only one behaving badly and not the worst one. How scary is that?
Has anyone successfully homeschooled before finalization?

i was in ca....but we were told that foster kids HAD to stay in an actual school. if you will finalize this june i would just look forward to being about to hs then. i hear your frustration though...and i am so sorry. if i had not have been able to pull my ds out of his k class last year i would have gone nuts. it was a horrible waste of time!

We did. We were in the 6 month waiting period to adopt a sib group. They were in the 2nd and 3rd grade. They came to us in April so we let them finish the school year out but requested a waiver for the new year. We were able to homeschool for the new year prior to their adoption and all went well. We are wanting to adopt again but we've been told not to expect another waiver - it's not common. You can email me for more information if you want to. There is a reg that addresses this - here's the link: 4200 School Options for Children; 4210 Choosing a Public School or RTC Program; 4220 School-Related Expenses That Are Not Reimbursable; 4221 Sending a Child to Private School; 4222 School-Age Children Who Are Placed Out-of-State; 4223 School Services.
