 My husband and I are both residents of MI, but due to the military we are living in CO. My foster sister just came up pregnant and cant keep the baby. Her and the father are willing to sign over all rights no problem. My questions are...
1) can we do a "do-it-yourself" adoption?
has anyone done this? any advise, positive or negative?
2) if not, where do we get the attorney?
MI? IN? CO? :moped:
Baby is due March 16!!! :happydance:
Thank you in advance for your help!:thanks:
yeah I know I used alot of smiles but they are so cute!!!
I'm not an expert but I would think that you'd want an atty wherever your foster sister is located & will give birth.
Most attys (at least in my limited experience) will do the paperwork for very reduced fee since you have everything else already worked out.
ohh and Congrats!!

I would contact an adoption attorney in your state and go from there. I would use one that is a member of the AAAA.

Mrs Cookie,
From everything I have read, when in the military, you should go to Legal on base for direction. They are not able to assist in the adoption process but can steer you in the right direction. I called yesterday and they were eager to help me. They said they will have all kinds of information waiting for me. Thank goodness! Good luck to you!:hippie:
Mrs.Cookie,
I must say that my statement about Legal was WRONG in a way. We had our appointment at Navy Legal and they could not provide us with any useful information. The guy was stumped and repeated "Umm" over and over. He also kept repeating that he didn't know how he could help us because all the adoptions that have come through there for advice were familial adoptions. They EVEN asked me if the child were related or unknown! They KNEW I was going in for information about adopting an unknown child but they had nothing for me. I wish you the best of luck and if it is any consolation, you should get more help than I did because the baby is identified within your family. Take care.
You will still need a homestudy, so, you'll have to that in CO. Because that is where you live. I know that at least in VA, the state you are a legal resident was irrelevant - it more to do with making sure there was room and a safe environment for the baby. I know for a fact my DH was not a VA resident with either of our homestudies. I may or may not have been with the 2nd.......
Quad A attorney definately - American Association of Adoption Attorneys, or something similar.
There is (or was) a military reiumbursement for adoption expenses. You do have to claim it as income.
You should, as a PP said, research the laws in the state your FS is most likely to give birth in, because those laws will LIKELY be the governing laws - although that isn't true in all cases either.
Also - due in March 2011 - alot can and often does change in that amount of time - so go into this with that knowledge, she has lots of time to change her mind. She must have just found out she was pregnant!
All the best to all of you....
