I just wanted to get some opinions about whether it's better to buy or rent a breast pump. From what I understand it's going to cost about $30-40 a month to rent and about $250-270 to buy. So it seems better to buy in the long run, but I wanted to get some BTDT input on the subject.
Any thoughts?

I'm in the same boat...although I already have a breast pump from my first bio child. The lactation specialist acted like the rented pump would be better but I'm going to go with mine. Maybe you can rent for a few months until your milk supply is established then go to a purchased one if you're wanting to pump for a long time. My only advice about buying is that you get what you pay for. I love my Medela Pump in Style. My friend got the one a step higher and I would probably buy that one if I had it to do again. But I definately would not go down from the one I have now.

I ended up buying the Medela Pump in Style Advanced(2009) on eBay for $50! I know it sounds weird to buy it from eBay but I figured it can't be any different the renting one. I'm going to buy knew breast shields and bottles and medela is sending me new tubing fo free! So all in all I got a $300 dollar machine for $75!
I read your other post about discussing abreastfeeding with bmom. I'm curious how to bring it up too!
She's due the 9th. There is a strong possiblity that she will go early. I started the regular protocol by Dr. Newman in March before we were matched with anyone. Found out two weeks ago about the match. The lactation consultant suggested I stop bc and start pumping and taking blessed thistle and other suggested things from the protocol (can't remember all of them) around June 12. When do you plan to start pumping?

I'll be pumping soon, too. I think the Pump In Style is a great pump. Sometimes LCs recommend a hospital-grade pump with a stronger motor if you'll be pumping exclusively. Beyond that, with the Medela pumps, at least, you probably won't find a lot of difference. I've used both, and I used all of the horns/bottles/tubes between the rental and the PIS interchangeably since the rental was a Medela, too.
