So after doing all my research, finally getting my husband on board, and calling DCF to get registered for the orientation, I am told by the person on the phone that FL doesn't DO foster-to-adopt. You have to choose either foster OR adoption.
Our goal is to adopt a girl under a year old (though that age will grow as our biological children do) and my understanding is that it's practically IMPOSSIBLE to be placed with a baby if you say you just want to adopt. And that if a foster baby does have parental rights term'd, usually the foster family will want to adopt her (as I certainly would, and would generally consider to be in the child's best interest if she's been living there for weeks, months, years, etc.) I get that their goal is reunification but this does not seem like an efficient way to work.
Is FL completely behind the times? What I'm reading on these boards is not encouraging.
Its not just Florida, it is everywhere. The right hand don't know what the left hand is doing, etc. It's terrible for the children, and it's terrible for people like us who want to give of our love and ourselves to these children. Complain to your governor and congressman. If enough of us complain, maybe this system will change. We'll never know unless we try.
