Hello everyone!
I joined this site about 2 years ago, when I first felt the Lord stirring in my husband and I to adopt a child internationally. We are just now trying to sort out a timeframe that will work for us, and raise the necessary money involved with adopting a child.
We already have 3 biological children of our own. Our eldest daughter is soon to be 8, our middle son is soon to be 5, and our baby boy was just born in the beginning of this past year. :)
We have desired to adopt for several years now, and feel strongly that we are to adopt a little girl of Asian descent. After reviewing the different countires and guidelines, we've been able to narrow down several from our list.
With already 3 children in our home, and the state in which we live, our choices seem quite limited which has been a bit discouraging.
So far we've roughly narrowed down our choices to the following:
South Korea: If we pursue this program, we will have to adopt a Waiting Child (which I am OK with, if the need is a minor or correctible one)
Kazakhstan: Love everything about this program, except for the travel time. (Yes, I know it is currently closed at this time, but everyone I've spoken with has seemed confident that it will reopen in Sep/Nov of this year) With 3kids at home, I honestly don't see how this one will be feasible. But I am not ruling it out just yet.
Taiwan: I really love what I have read so far on this program. We are fine with adopting a somewhat older child (between 2 and 3 years of age) and have heard lots of great things about this program.
Some questions I have about these programs that some of you may be able to answer or give your experience with:
*For South Korea, do any of their waiting children include children in the toddler age range (say 15 months to age 3) that do not have any phyiscal special needs?
*Has anyone here adopted from Kazakhstan? If so, what was your experience like? How long did you have to stay in country for your first trip?
*As for Taiwan, we have been told by the agency that we are strongly considering working with that the wait is between 1 and 2 years for a referral, plus preparatory period. Has anyone here adopted from Taiwan? And if so, was your experience a positive one?
As I said, we are just beginning this process and will probably have to save up money for about a year before we are ready to get the ball rolling so to speak. I realize that any country's requirements can change in that time, but I'm just trying to get a feel for what to expect, and to decide which country is a good fit for us.
Not sure if you're still looking, but I have a friend who adopted from Kazakhstan. I can get information from her, or give you her email address so you can chat directly with her.
Have you looked into Steven Curtis Chapman's foundation called Shaohannah's Hope? They provide financial assistance to people adoopting. A couple from my church used them to adopt their son.
