I am mom to the most beautiful 2 month old "biracial" (birthmom 1/2 hispanic, 1/2 cc; bf aa---is this considered biracial??) Anyway, he had what I thought was baby acne on his face. I avoided lotion as I didn't want to make it worse, but then realized it was very dry. I think it may actually be eczema (DS 1 who shares the same birthmom has it)
Sadly, those dry areas have become lighter patches of skin. Just wondering if his skin color will even out over time or have I just allowed lifelong skin damage?
I called my Dr office and the nurse advised to use Aquaphor until my scheduled appt this week.
Any feedback is appreciated from those who have BTDT.
I don't personally have any advice but you might want to PM a member called JenC. What you are describing sounds alot like what happened to her younger child. The coloring on his face did go back to normal but I think it took a few months. My son has excema on his elbows/knees. It has never caused his skin to lighten though. I do use Aquaphor products and have good results with keeping his flare ups at bay. Good Luck!

Funny, Gwen, I was going to respond anyway, although I'm supposed to be out painting. We'll say I'm on break.
Been there, done that. Baby P's skin is normal now, he's 10 mo old. His skin started changing on his face about that time, 2 mo old or so. It lasted for 2-3 mo. Exactly like your baby, it started after a baby acne outbreak. After the acne went away, he was left with light spots. I wasn't concerned because I knew dark skin takes time to get the color back, and he's pretty dark. But the lightness kept spreading all over his face in splotchy spots.
We got a referral to the dermatologist, who just said that dark skin can take some time to heal from trauma, which would have been the baby acne. Plus, it was very cold and dry outside - dead of winter. He thought that contributed also. It kept spreading until his face/neck was more light than dark. He also was having Excema flare ups really badly and we tried switching him to Nutramigen. It was only after he was completely off dairy/soy that his skin started to heal. It was a gradual process, but I started to notice that it was all coming back to a normal color.
PM me your email addy and I'll send you some pics from that time so you can see. Excema is a constant battle here on his arms/legs, and the excema itself didn't cause the skin discoloration.
I suggested to the derm. about switching to the Nutramigen formula, and he said we could if we wanted, but he didn't think it would help. Numerous people pushed getting a 3rd opinion.
Honestly, I don't know if it was just the skin healing from the baby acne or if it was a dairy/soy allergy, both seemed to happen at about the same time. It's worth a shot to see if it helps, though. I was worried about permanent discoloration too. And our regular ped just said Aquaphor, she was clueless as to anything else to help. Aquaphor doesn't actually help him much, I've come up with my own concoction of lotion that is 1/2 Eucerin, 1/2 vasoline, and a few drops of Tea Tree Oil.
Hope this helps, and seriously shoot me your email. We can compare.
My little guy also has the milk protein/soy allergy so we used Alimentum. We were concerned about excema too because his bgma and half brother have it. But ours turned out to be strickly a milk/soy issue, luckily. It is pretty common and our pedi figured it out right away. We switched from regular milk formula to soy then realized we needed hypoallergenic. We also had some intestinal issues along w/the skin. Good luck figuring it out!
