I did not put a christmas tree up last year because W was at the stage where he was pulling up on everything and climbing anything he could. I just didn't want to deal with it. When I decided that I would put up the tree this year I also decided that I wanted to find a black angel to go on top of our tree and some black cherub ornaments. I live in a diverse city and work in a neighborhood that is overwhelmingly black with a fair amount of hispanics and asians with a few white people thrown in for good measure. I did not think it would be that hard but it has been an ordeal. I even took the manager of the Box Mart aside and made a stink about how there were no black baby dolls in the toy section and no black angels in the christmas section in a predominantly black neighborhood. Well today I found my new black angel christmas tree topper at a corner drug store. Unlike some black dolls who have white features but brown skin, this angle has african american facial features and african american hair plus she is dark complected. I love her. I have been super busy with work, school, child, and chores. I plan to put up the tree and decorate for christmas this weekend. I will post a picture when I get the chance.

Sleeplvr, I never thought about Greenbriar, I'm on the southside of metro Atlanta, I bet Shannon Mall probably had some, but I haven't checked to see if they reopened! lol I should check on my lunch break tomorrow

I think you're in the Atlanta metro area. I used to go to the Macy's at Greenbriar Mall when I first moved here because the stores where I live didn't carry any. You will find Santas, Angels, cherubs and etc there. That is the only place I've ever found cherubs.
You can also try Garden Ridge. They always seem to have angels every year. Not sure what they have this year since I didn't make my annual Thanksgiving day run.
In most areas you have to catch items when they put them out. They usually disappear when the Christmas decorations go out in October. If you wait closer to Christmas they are gone.

I've never been to Shannon Mall. I'm north of the Big Chicken.
Greenbriar had black nutcrackers which I had never seen before. I got a beautiful black madonna ornament from there. They've had snow globes in the past too.
A friend and I used to only buy each other black Christmas stuff every year because it was so hard to find. I've got pillows, throws, angels, cherubs ornaments, snow globes... I've got a collection of black santas... It was a whole lot of fun tracking stuff down every year.
I couldn't find one I liked so I'm making one. I'm about 30 or more hours into her so far, and I've decided she is NOT going out this year...maybe next. I'm doing needle felting. I'll try to get some pictures of her up for you guys. She doesn't have "features" really...I'm not that advanced. Maybe someday.
Check Walmart online. They have an AA angel and you can use the store locator to find it.

I definatly think the Santa and penguin are something kids can do. I just hand sanded a gourd with rough sandpaper until I got the smoothness I wanted and then painted them with craft paint that you can get at any craft store. For Santa's face, I used pieces from a Mr. Potato Head. You may want to drill the holes in the gourd for the kids where the pieces go in. For Santa's beard, I used batting for a quilt and some spray on adhesive. The white around his hat is a feather boa I found. That's glued on with fabric glue. The eyes on the penguin are dolls eyes that eye glued on with Gorilla glue. I used to watch way too much DIY network and HGTV before I had kids.
