Hi,
My husband and I are both Canadian citizens and in the USA on work permits. We were thinking about adopting internationally and wanted to know if anyone had any information or contacts that they could share with us. We haven't started the process yet, but reading about it on various forums tells me that its really hard to adopt in the USA if either spouse is not a US citizen. Is there a way around that as we are currently residing here and have no plans of going back to Canada anytime soon -
any help would be appreciated!!

If neither you nor your spouse is a U.S. citizen, you will not be able to get an adoption visa to bring your child into the U.S., even if you complete an adoption overseas. Adoption visas are granted only if at least one of the new parents is a U.S. citizen. And, unfortunately, your newly adopted child probably won't qualify for any other type of visa.
You may want to consult an immigration attorney who is familiar with adoption issues, to see if there is any possible way around the laws. However, I must say that there are a number of families in your position on these adoption.com boards, and they don't hold out much hope.
People who are in the U.S. on legal permanent resident visas (green cards) can sometimes adopt a U.S.-born child. This gets around all of the immigration issues. However, because work visas are temporary, and the holders are not expected to remain in the U.S. permanently, it is unlikely that you will be able to adopt a child who is a U.S. citizen.
