DH and I are trying to decide which route to take. We've pretty much agreed that Korea is probably the best option for adoption at this point, but now we have to decide whether we want to take on a special needs child or a non-special needs child. If we go the route of special needs, we'd like something minor or correctable.
How many special needs children are available for adoption in Korea? Is it a significant number? I've been to a couple of adoption sites where they have photo listings, but there aren't many children listed there--usually only 15 or 20. I would assume there are many more children than that needing homes, but perhaps my perception is skewed. Once we choose an agency, will the agency be able to direct us to the children with needs we're most interested in accepting?
Keep in mind, Korea is really promoting domestic adoption, so there are not scads of children waiting for families that have actually been relinquished by their biological families. So, what you see on the WC pages are the ones who are waiting because they do not have a HS ready family. Because there is not a family with a HS ready family, most of the children that make it to those listings are more special needs than others through the regular or WC programs. Keep in mind this is not always 100% true. Some boys may have less issues because boys are not the preferred gender across all adoptive family composites. Whether you go the regular or WC route depends what you're open to. This is something only you can decide. We loved the WC route, but others may prefer to have what they consider a healthy child. Of course it also depends on your outlook. We believe that at any point any child, biological or adopted, may be diagnosed with something. We decided to know that possible something as upfront as possible and just go WC.
Good luck.

Your agency will put you on a shorter waiting list, when a child comes up that matches your criteria, your agency will show you their folder and/or some other folders that match your criteria. You won't be looking at dozens or hundreds of files or anything like large numbers.
