Hi All,
I apologize if I have asked this before - I can't remember what I posted and on what forum. We are 41 and 42 and our youngest is a 3 yr old from Guatemala. I understand we are not eligible for a child 0-3 due to our ages however is it possible for us to adopt a special needs child (minor/correctable)?
Our hope was that the Guatemala pilot program would open as we planned on adopting a specific special needs child. The pilot will not take place anytime in the near future and with mixed emotions - the child has been adopted in Guatemala. Thrilled she found a family but sad it wasn't us.
Does anyone know if it is possible due to our ages to adopt a special needs child from Colombia (0-3 yr old girl)? If so, what is the estimated wait time as I know it is a very very long wait times in this program. I've contacted 4 agencies - one never responded, one said very few special needs so not possible and the other I'm waiting to hear back. Of those two - one is much more expensive -approx 10-15k more than all other agencies. That seems crazy to me so I'm not optimistic about them. e
oh- we are looking at minor/correctable needs. The child in Guatemala was blind in one eye but most likely could have been corrected cosmetically and possibly even some sight restored with surgery.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks
Chrissy

The agency we are working with says that parents age 39-41 may adopt a Colombian waiting child from 36-59 months or two siblings 0-60 months. Parents age 42-44 years may adopt one child 60-83 months or 2 siblings 0-83 months. Our ages bridge two different ranges, and they are going with the age of the "primary" parent (typically mother...but they may just go with the age of the younger parent).
We're told the wait time for minor correctable special needs child is 3-8 months after acceptance!
Feel free to contact me with further questions!
