I am glad for ones who are trying, already have or pretty much an adoptee like myself. It is a beautiful thing but every case is so different. I should know because I am talking about myself. I was adopted well I thought I was until last year when my purse was stolen with all identification including my children as well. So when I went to SSA to get replacements, they could not find my current name in the system but with the info I had on the form, well another name came up totally different. I went home and called vital records and again with the info I gave them also came up with the name in the computer that SSA have previously. Vital records told me that my foster mother didn't complete the adoptions papers for lack of documents she was told to bring so my case was closed. I had to take the name that SSA had because of the info I gave them(bio parents' names, etc) and go with that. Mind you now that I am walking around with two different names and the same ssn. My foster mom now deceased somehow placed me in school with a ss card that has the name I am using now but it was stolen but I do have a copy of it but can't never get a replacement for that only the birth name. SSA says I changed my name myself and it isn't their fault but all of my legal documents has my current name not the bio name whatsoever. I cannot change my name myself without all of the legal activity you have to accomplish and it is nowhere in the system to show I did that. What do I do about these names cause I am tired of people saying things like "which person are you or you need to get this fix before you retire"? Please help cause this is too STRESSFUL!

In my county you don't even need an attorney. It is $150 to file the forms with the Circuit Court. You then have to be fingerprinted (not sure the cost of that) and attend a court hearing, but overall not a difficult process. And I am in the county that includes the city of Detroit so you can well imagine the overloaded court system in my county. A lot of counties that don't include huge cities make it even easier.
Good luck!
