Right now i take 100mg of Dom/day. I take 5- 2X day. Its starting to get kinda expensive, and i was taking up to 160mg/day at one point but i am down to 100 now. I didnt think the 160mg was really getting me much further than when i was taking 100mg. So my question is, i want to try and decrease the dosage a little more. Like i would like to try and get down to 50 or 60mg/day without it hurting my supply too badly. Is that even possible to just cut it in half and not for your supply to suffer?? I just am wondering that even tho i induced lactation, i do have a pretty regular supply, so do i have to continue to take the Dom to keep the supply??
Im scared to try cuz if its too bad i dont want to go down to nothing. It took a while to get where i am right now and i dont want to wreck that. Does anyone have any experience with cutting down or stopping your Dom?? Thanks, Rach

Like with everything else to do with induced lactation, its pretty hard to predict. I've known quite a few moms who have found that going down to 80, or even 60, hasn't made much difference in their supply. I have also known a few who could gradually get off of it, completely, and still do fine, but that is less common and was usually someone who had been breastfeeding for a long time. I think it also depends on how close you are coming to providing all of your baby's needs. For someone who isn't currently supplementing, it might be more important where, for someone who is producing somewhere near half, a small increase in supplementation may not make a big difference. Of course, someone who is producing just a few ounces a day probably wouldn't want to decrease any more, either.
Thanks for the responses. Yeah, im only producing 5 oz/day so im not anywhere near producing enough for even half. He's up to 30oz/day. He will start eating cereal pretty soon tho, but that wont decrease his intake of milk that much. Im just looking at ways to cut our spending as things are getting tight and I could buy alot of formula for how much im spending on Dom in a month. Its about $40/month and for that i can buy 3 1/2 cans of formula. Thats 300 oz/approx. for $40 In a month i make about 150oz or a little less of breastmilk. So thats half as much milk for the same price.
Not that its really fair to compare the 2 because i think breastmilk is really priceless, im just saying economically, at this point formula is cheaper.
I was thinking about dropping down some more or stopping and then taking a good herbal supplement, but for the one i want, that is like $43/month if i take it as they say. So thats more expensive than my Dom is right now. I think maybe for now ill cut something else and keep doing what im doing. Its important for me to continue to nurse, so something else will have to go.
Something like my DH's nasty smoking habit. Yuck!! He comes in from outside and always smells like an ashtray. And them darn things aint cheap no more. $7/pack. Thats like $75/month he spends on that crap. I could buy alot of Dom and herbs for $75/month!!! And it wont kill me either. Ill have to keep nagging!!! :D
ETA: I think i remember reading somewhere that ordering higher quantities of Dom makes it more likely to be "confiscated" (sp??) from customs than ordering say 600 tablets (which is how much i order now) is that true ya think?? Cuz its much cheaper to order like 1200 tablets than even the 600 tablets, but not worth it if they get taken away by customs. Anyone hear of this?? Thanks, Rach
I know what you mean about the cigarettes! I have two sons who smoke (used to have three) and my daughter-in-law smokes, too. They have never smoked inside, but there is still some smoke that drifts into the house, and they smell like it, too. I hope and pray that my granddaughter will never start, but if both of her parents and her favorite uncle keep smoking, it is pretty likely that she will want to do it when she is a teenager.
With assessing the cost of producing breast milk, versus formula, I always consider the reduction of illness, too. If those ounces of breast milk prevent even one infection, that's a savings in doctor visits and medication costs.
Yeah, I think ordering huge shipments of dom probably increases the possibility that it will be noticed by customs. I remember one mom saying that customs took her domperidone, probably six or seven years ago, but I've been in touch with several dozen moms who were using it and that is the only time I've heard of that happening. I don't know why the FDA refuses to approve it. They say it hasn't been proven for use with lactation, but it has been widely used in other countries for many years. The fact that no one has funded a formal, scientific study doesn't mean that it isn't potentially beneficial. Studies take lots of money and no one stands to make tons of money from women producing more breast milk for their babies. There are some concerns about virtually all medications. Like with everything else, one has to weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks. There are plenty of risks to formula, too.
