I am getting my teeth fixed next week. I am terrified of the dentist and have avoided going except when i absolutely had too so now my teeth are in need of repair. So im doing sedation dentistry. My dad had it done a year ago,(he had ALOT more work done than im having) but anyways, the dentist told me that she always suggests taking 2 tylenol and 2 ibuprofen together and taht is like taking prescription strength pain pills. But im nursing (well, mostly pumping) and im pretty sure that you arent suppose to take ibuprofen while nursing. What im wondering is that how much of the ibuprofen actually gets in the milk?? i only produce about 4 oz/day right now. So out of the 30oz he drinks in a day, does the 4oz really matter if im taking a little ibuprofen?? My dad said his teeth really hurt for the next 2 or 3 months til he quit taking the meds all together. And now im getting scared because my dad and I both have a high pain tolerance and if his hurt enough for him to take teh meds, ill need them too!! I take tylenol once in a while, but it doesnt seem to ever do anything. I just dont want this to end my breastfeeding run. But it would be really depressing to pump and dump for a month while i get my teeth fixed. Pretty much the whole month of May ill probably need the ibuprofen/tylenol.
Dont get me wrong, if im putting my baby in danger, ill just pump and dump, but i dont know if 4oz/day will really be a big deal. -Rach

Here is a quote I found on this page; Medications in the Breast-Feeding Mother - July 1, 2001 - American Family PhysicianANALGESICSOf the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ibuprofen (Motrin) is the preferred choice because it has poor transfer into milk and has been well-studied in children. Long half-life NSAIDs such as naproxen (Naprosyn), sulindac (Clinoril) and piroxicam (Feldene) can accumulate in the infant with prolonged use.7It looks like ibuprofen is about as safe a drug as there is, for taken while lactating. Good luck with the dentist. I really need to go, too. For some reason, I tolerate the pain of dental work exceptionally well. I have had many teeth filled with no novocaine, but I'm a total pansy with some other things.
