I know they are pricey but I LOVE my Britax ones. Between the LATCH system which makes them super safe (impossible to get wrong), the padding and adaptability it is so worth it!

Same advice. There was a thread here last year that convinced me. There is a lady on the forums who is a car seat safety tech:

I love both Britax and Graco carseats.. Right now I'm lusting after Graco's newest because not only does it go up to 100 lbs, it has a base --for a convertible seat!! No more reinstalling if you have to switch cars (get an extra base for 2nd vehicle) or switch from rear to forward facing..

How long are you looking to rear face your child? Britax seats are nice, but they are way more expensive than other seats that will rear face your child for just as long or even longer.
Other convertible seats that rear face to 40 lbs are the graco myride (you can get it on sale for $100), safety 1st complete air, sunshine kids radian (actually rear faces to 45 lbs).
Britax seats are not safer than other seats. ALL carseats made in the US pass the same safety testing. And they are all equipped with LATCH connecters.
edited to add-- the seats mentioned above have a 65 lb forward facing limit, although most kids outgrow the seat in height first. Britax shells are shorter than a couple mentioned above, so it would be outgrown sooner than the radian or the complete air.
