Help Please!?!

Hello all, My name is Marc. My father was adopted in the state of NY. He is 55 years old. He has been diagnosed with multiple mental problems. I am wanting to know family history. I also want to know who I am. My ancestory. where I came from good or bad. I have called a few phone numbers I found online (NY Gov Offices). I have been told by everyone that I cannot obtain this information ever!?! I do not buy it. There has to be a way for me to obtain this information. I have also been told once my father has passed away there will definately be no way of me getting this information. Please help!!!!! I need some insight. I dont think this is right. I dont want to contact his parents if they are even still alive I just want information family health,Heritage,exc.... Thank you
