Lil, I don't think legally you can unless it is a relative adoption. Both the US and the UK are signatories to the Hague Convention and that has strict criteria regarding when and how it can happen. And the main reason it is not possible is because the child will not be an orphan. And if you try to circumvent the Hague Convention you will get into trouble. A member called Sak is the best one on knowing the laws and hopefully she will see this post. Dickons

I am in the UK. If you don't mind my asking, is there any particular reason why you prefer America to the UK? I think the process after birth is better in the UK, you get a proper period (at least 6 weeks) to think about your decision, in reality at least a few months, rather than being pressured to make a decision in a few days. And I know some areas would allow you to look at profiles of prospective parents, and state your preferences from among them, you don't have no say at allAs to the law, I guess different states have different policies on how they deal with things. You'd have to give birth in the US for definite, you cannot bring a child from the UK to the US for adoption, except if the court grants permission, in the case of a relative adoption. But I don't think some states are happy about women coming in from abroad specifically to give birth. If you did give birth in the US, I don't think the Hague would apply, because the baby would be born a citizen of the same country as the adoptive parents. And then I suppose you would be able to complete a private adoption. But realistically, you can't fly in just before giving birth, you'd have to support yourself for a few weeks. Hopefully someone who actually knows what the law says will be along soon...but I know UK law is that if your child is born in the UK, he/she will have to be adopted by a UK family, unless there are suitable relatives abroad
