Hi, I am sure there are many many places to get great hairstyle pictures, but I am not finding any. My daughter is eight and so going through that stage of not wanting to look like a little girl(to many ponies), but I don't want her to grown(flat ironed). We compromise with doing her hair in braids but I am running out of ideas on how to lay/pattern the braids. I have asked some of my AA friends and even some girls at the hair store, but they all just tell me I do a good job, and to keep playing with it. I really could use some ideas! (Pics a plus I am a visual learner!)
BTW: she is full AA, her hair has been permed, but I only flat iron it for special occasions.
Why don't you take her in somewhere and have it braided? I just took DS in because I was at a loss as to what to do with it and I am super happy with the results. I just did a search on Bing and all these photos came up. Here are my search results. I am not good with hair, so I have been thankful that my only child with real African hair is a boy. His is so tight and coarse that if it gets more than a half inch long, you can barely even get the clippers through it, let alone a comb. My youngest daughter is Haitian and Filipino and her hair is kind of half way in between. Last year, when she was 14, she really wanted extensions, so we tried it. She loved how it looked, but couldn't stand the way it felt, and took them out after only two weeks. If your daughter is used to having a lot done to her hair, though, it may be a good solution for you. Once they get it all in, it is pretty low maintenance.
Why is her hair permed at 8. IMHO AA hair should be natural. Yes, it takes more time to care for but it is natural, permed hair is not. Braids are fine do not keep them in too long and do not make them too tight. Too much heat is also not good for the hair. Are you keeping it well oiled?
There are several sites I've found helpful, although my DD is only 2. Some are on FB
--Chocolate hair, Vanilla Care
--Just 4 Girls Braids
--Keep Me Curly
yahoo group: adoptionhair_skincare
I know there are more but those are the few off the top of my head. They have lots of pictures for ideas.
You can also search on YouTube for instructional videos.
But I'd suggest sitting with your daughter and seeing if she sees any she likes and what you think you could do yourself. If it's a style that's too difficult maybe take her to a salon to have it done for a special day. :)
Her hair is well oiled and maintained, and I think I do a fine job with my braids, just wanted some new styles. I have taken her to the salon, and I have had my aa friends do her hair. Actually that's how it got premed. She was spending time at my friends house and she wanted to do both of our girls hair the same so I said ok without realizing that she was going to perm it. Believe me I miss the body it had.
Thanks for the websites, I appreciate them.

I like the site Keep Me Curly!. She has lots of how-to videos and lost of pictures. I feel the same way. I think I do a good job, but I get tired of the same looks. I'm going to give my daughter some box braids today. They last a long time and it adds some versatility.
