Hi!
we were selected by a bm and I want to know what your opinion is regarding a BM that states no drug use but has no medical records and is due in one month. July 26. She selected us and said she didn't use. We were also selected once before and althought BM said no drugs she tested postive for drugs when we saw her records, we said no at that point. I guess I wonder what you all think. I know that some drugs won't show up such as coke and meth. I need help figuring this out. I guess if I don't want to accept this I need to do a low risk adoption where there is a lot of medical history etc. Thanks a ton, we need to let the agencey know today, what rollercoaster this can be!
Sincerely,
Kate
My son was already born when we were matched, and bmom had no prenatal care. I worked with an agency where counselors really do work closely with the emoms, and the counselor said she believed that there was no drug use. Even with drug tests, though, and lots of medical records, most drugs only show up for a short time on tests, so you would only know that there were no drugs in her system when the test was given. To some extent you will always have to take things on faith. I don't know how things work in your agency; if the counselor knows the emom well, maybe you can get an impression from them? Sorry not to have more advice for you - good luck with your decision.

Thanks so much! The agencey does not know this bmom well she is flying to Utah, so the social worker in Florida has talked with her and just started discussions with her. I am told it would be high risk since there is not a record and I would have to just take the chance....
If the expectant mother is flying into Utah and is a resident of another state, how in the world will the hospital and childbirth expenses be paid? I seriously doubt that Utah's Medicaid program will cover her, since she's not a state resident.
Flying to Utah? Ethical red flags all over this. Agencies fly women into Utah all the time, because the laws in Utah are much more pro-Adoptive family, and screw the birth families.
I would run far and fast from an agency that did this. Disgusting.
As for drugs....you will never, ever get a 100% accurate picture of the health of a newborn that you didn't carry yourself. And there are tests for meth and cocaine, that I can assure you. If you haven't done any research on drugs and pregnancy, real research you are doing yourself a disservice. Babies are born drug dependent every day that flourish and thrive in decent, loving homes. While there are extreme cases, most children go on to live normal, developmentally correct lives. Perhaps ADHD, sensory processing disorder, things that kids WITHOUT drug exposure deal with.
Not to mention she is due in 5 weeks and should not be flying whatsoever...
I feel these tactics are severly lacking in any ethics at all...
Dickons

i second every single one of these sentences.
We, as adoptive parents, have to put some faith that e-moms are being honest with us. You can ask for her to take a drug test, many adoptive parents do. Also, talk to an ob or peditrician about the effects on drugs/alcohol on a baby. You may be surprised at what you find out.

Well I can say this, my son was born addicted to cocaine. He spent over a week in the hospital. My son met every single milestone from birth. He was advanced for his age & was speaking 2 languages at 2 years old. Though he has had some health problems they are attributed to his foster home. Not only that but you may miss the forest for the trees. Though they may not have drugs in their system they could have a million other health problems that even the BEST pre-natal care doesn't detect.
