We are looking to foster-adopt through the state. We called 15 days ago to start the process. They said they would forward my information to DYFS and if I don't receive anything from DYFS in 7 business days to call back. I called back and was told they would resend the information and note that it was a "miss" I should receive something shortly but if I don't call back in 7 business days. Tomorrow is 7 business days.
I have looked into working with one agency - Children's Home Society but they require the foster child to have his or her own room. We have a cape style house and a 2 year old and we were planning on having them share a room or be in with us for a while, depending on the age of the baby (we are only looking for 0-2 to keep the birth order intact). Eventually we would either add on or move but not for at least a year or two.
Its so frustrating that I can't even get the process started.

I don't know anything about working through an agency (we went straight through DYFS), but, sadly, yeah. You probably do have to 'get used to it.'
Meaning that their concept of time and ours are NOT the same.
We were told 90-100 days to complete the process. I was pretty proactive (as in, I have no problem making myself a nuisance) and it took more like 6 months to get licensed (initial call in late November, licensed in June).
So, I would call again.
Also, I know when working through DYFS a child under two can room-in with you, and kids under a certain age (either 5 or 6) can room with the opposite sex (dunno if that affects you or not). I'm not sure about rooming bio and foster together, but my boys share a room...
Just keep at it, and it WILL get done. Good luck!

I would call them again. I was not proactive and did not keep on top of them. As a result the entire process from start to finish took 9 months! Yes, a very long time. I don't think that's typical, but I know paperwork got forgotten about, etc. If I had called maybe it would have moved along quicker.
