My husband and I live in Philadelphia and are very interested in foster parenting. However, we aren't really sure where to start! (i.e; which agency, who provides classes, etc).
We called DHS and a woman I spoke with recommended "Bethanna" for an agency. Would any one agree? Disagree? We are under the impression that different agencies specialize in different children and case type; medical needs, primarily respite care, teens, etc. But we are having a hard time figuring out what each agency's focus is simply from their web-sites. Some first hand experiences would be so very appreciated!
Thank you!
I believe that, in order to foster in PHL, you do have to go through a private agency. I don't think Philadelphia DHS is allowed to oversee its own foster homes because of the mess they made many years back. But maybe things have changed.
I have no experience with fostering in Philadelphia (we're in the burbs), but you can probably get licensed with an agency that takes foster children from the surrounding counties, as well, which will increase your chances to get a placement in your preferred age group.
Good luck - it will be best to speak with current foster parents of whatever agency you choose. Ask the agency recruiter for current foster parents you can speak with.
