I will first start off by saying I'm an adultee adoptee and a very proud Catholic. Looking under "New Posts" and having seen RAD a few times, I clicked on the thread to find out what this "RAD" is and what it's about. I'm just starting, so please be patient. Have any of you who have had to deal with RAD thought about seeking advice from an exorcist (yes, this is a legitimate question, I have been told stories from exorcists of what parents have done that have caused their children to be possessed, some pretty out there stuff - like a baby taking the aspergillum - the stick that is used to bless the congregation with holy water - out of the priests hand and throwing it across the whole church because his parents used santaria to get pregnant with him)? I am just curious if anyone has tried to investigate possession of their RAD children before moving them onto the next home.

I have never heard of an exorcist being used for a RAD child.
I am a big proponent of the power of prayer, but you need to be very careful, particularly with a foster child. You must respect the religious background of the child. Without consent from the bio parents and CPS, any attempt to perform an exorcism on a foster child would be grounds for removal.
I have known of a foster home that was shut down after attempting with Church members to "Lay hands" on a child to "cast out evil". It was extremely taumatizing for the child and did nothing for his healing.
RAD children are not possessed. Their ability to bond/attach to another person is damaged. They need love, structure and healing, not an exorcism.

That's what I wasn't sure of. I know with exorcism, the Church takes great precaution to make sure all medical and psychological reasons can be rulled out. But I am also aware that demonic possession, obsession and oppression really do exist and are more dominant than what our society likes to believe. That is why I asked this question. My heart goes out to all you parents and the children you love who suffer from this, it just seems that some have more challenging cases than others and those are the cases I was wondering if it could be something more on the supernatural level.
As an atheist, I don't believe in demons. I do believe that the simplest, most obvious answer is usually the correct one and see no reason to read a supernatural cause into a very understandable human defense mechanism. Going from that point of view, I think an exorcism would be even more traumatic to an already traumatized child. Meaning that if there was even the smallest amount of trust established, resorting to an exorcism would obliterate it and just confirm all over again to the child that people are not to be trusted.
I am thankful that, for most people, exorcism is viewed in the same light as drilling holes into the skulls of schizophrenics to let the "bad spirits" out.
I'm currently working with a child who's been diagnosed RAD. An attempt at exorcism by her mother led to her most recent psychotic break, attempts to killi her relative caregivers, subsequent hospitalization and residential placement. I'm not saying it happens with every child, but this kid is not possessed by demons, just by her past trauma.

No I didn't consider that. I met the child's emotional and mental needs for security, safety, love. I fed the child real food, not junk, no chemicals or food dyes, so his body and mind had what they needed to succeed. As the child attacked me, mentally, emotionally, physically, roughly 500-1500 times a day, I just hung in there, and reset my anger button at the end of the night. That is, I erased my frustrations and anger, and started fresh in the morning. I found people who were willing to let us be a part of their family, on a relatively frequent basic, and created *deep* relationships for the child with a *few* children and adults, not wide, shallow relationships with many people. I didn't put the child in day care, so they could be in a calmer, less stimulating environment. Lots of outside time, lots of park playground time.I did all the above over and over, it was incredibly hard. And it worked. The child began to heal. A little at first, and it snowballed. More healing. People remarked on how transformed the child was. When I read your post, I think you and/or anyone who would suggest that, are looking for a "quick, easy" solution. Something that would require a few minutes or an hour of time, and POOF! The child is transformed!I haven't found life to be that easy. RAD isn't either.
gmarie, I too am a very faithful catholic. This is not a demonic possession.
These are children who have been harmed by thier BP or those who have cared for them. Their basic needs are neglected and they are unable to bond normally. I too believe in the power of prayer, those prayers help(give me the grace) to not kill the child!! Honestly, parenting these children is a long hard road one that should be entered into with open eyes and education. These kiddos are further damaged by being moved.
