I will make it short. I was looking for my birth sister which I only found out in June 2011 about. A person emailed me saying she was her. She was only willing to tell me her birth mother's name (which I had posted on the adoption websites) and her date of birth (which I also posted on the adoption websites). She asked me to share pictures of myself and her parents, asked me what her parents were like etc. I have given her the information she asked for but she won't even give me a name by which to call her by. She won't give any information at all. Is this a hoax or is this normal for an adoptee??? I don't know what to do and her latest request is she'd like to check me out on facebook, yet I have no means with which to verify who she is...HELP pls. :(
I'd be very cautious. I don't think this is normal behavior for an adoptee, or anyone else.

It doesn't sound normal to me,I would end it,if she couldn't give me her name or info about her, even if she's your sister.
Thank you so much guys! Over the weekend, she provided me with her son's email address so that I could see him on Facebook but she still won't tell me anything about herself such as her name. His profile is restricted and I don't feel comfortable adding him as a friend. I've sent her an email saying that I want her name and if she still won't give it then I'll just have to tell her that, until she's ready to give me her name I won't be sharing anything further with her.
Really appreciate the help, thank you so much!
Final follow up on this. I sent him a friend request, was able to look at their profiles. She graduated university when she was ten and went on to graduate school when she was 13... both Facebook profiles were created the day this person originally contacted me. I confronted her with all of this information:
have to say that I'm a little confused...your profile shows that you graduated from University of E L in 1986 and your High School shows Westm Sec class of 1989. I also noticed that D was born in 1993, you were so young when you had him, 16... It feels like you're not being completely up front with me. If you were born in 1976 how did you graduate university at the age of 10 before you graduated high school at the age of 13...and had a son at 16?
You were concerned this was a hoax when you first emailed me but now, after seeing that your profiles (both you and your son's) were created on the 17th of October which is the day you contacted me and all the information they contain, I have to say that I'm really concerned this is a hoax. There's just one thing I don't understand, why do all of this?
Her response:
i tried to correct they are face book suggestions i did not register it like that.
My final email:
Both FB profiles were created the same day you reached out to me for the first time, October 17th and now both your profiles are gone from FB. Also, if D is 18, that would mean you had him when you were 16. You haven't given me anything, where you live, your real name, nothing. Either you weren't ready to contact me and learn about your birth family or you are a hoax.
If you are in fact looking for your birth family, then you will have to be honest and exchange information, no more hiding. I have been upfront with you, answered the questions you asked and provided you with what you requested. You haven't answered any of my questions truthfully and only said your birth mother's name was B B and your date of birth was Oct 31, 1976. At this point, for me to trust you any further, you're going to have to give me some more information about your birth parents. You can always find out exactly who they are by contacting the provincial registry of the province you were adopted in. You'll see that I am listed on those registries. Also, your long form birth certificate will provide you with your birth parents names as well as your Parents that adopted you.
I don't understand why someone would impersonate an adoptee...what do they get out of it!? It's perverse and it's sick. This is enough of a roller coaster... :grr: :(

As I work in a field that is very in touch with this type of thing, I think what you experienced was a modified form of "phishing." Phishing can loosely be defined as impersonating another person or entity with the end goal of obtaining the identifying information of the person being scammed. That information is then used for opening various accounts, identity theft and so on.
I've seen instances where the names and information of deceased infants have been used, senior citizens "promised" a sweepstakes win if they will only provide certain information and so on. Yes, there are some sick puppies out there.
It's a good case in point. In a day and age where we have more access to more information more quickly than ever before, so do the bad guys. We must be very cautious about what we share and with whom.
Best,
PADJ
I'm glad I had this forum as a resource. I'm not sure how far I would've allowed it to go if I hadn't had all of your responses. There was a part of me that was scared that I had found her and would loose her. I can't believe what people are willing to do. I've officially witnessed a whole new level of low... :( It was my sister's birthday yesterday. I hope she was able to celebrate it surrounded by people who love her. And hopefully, I'll get a chance to meet her some day. Thank you so much guys.
