Hair Trim

My DD is 4 y.o. and had never had a hair cut/trim. Is that right? How old were your girls when they got their first trim? Once I looked closely, it seemed that DD hair was 2 completely different textures. The ends were very tightly coiled, tangled and hard to comb thru. From the scalp to just before the ends it was much easier to comb thru... was that a sign the ends were damaged and needed to be cut? I trimmed her ends about a 1/2 inch. I plan to keep on top of this... but was wondering if I've been remiss on trimming her ends and should have started this sooner.
