J is 6 months old today and his hair probably needs to be cut, but I can't make myself do it. I actually think I would have to take him somewhere to have it done, because cutting hair is not my gift. I don't want to cut the curls on top, but the back of his hair turns into a big rat's nest after he's been in his carseat for a while. He's got a lot of hair.
I'm curious about this too! DS is 7 months old and hasn't had his cut yet. BUT, his is the opposite of your son, DrAmanda: long curls on top and short fuzz in the back. Much to short in back to be cut, but some of his top curls can stretch out almost 3"! DH wants to cut it now, but I want to wait.
So, when did everyone break down for the first haircut??

C is 8 months, and I haven't cut his hair. Every one of my AA friends has said not before 1 year at the earliest. C's hair is really long on top and shorter in back, but the back often turns into a pretty bad mat by the end of the day (different texture; it's much coarser in the back). I'm still waiting; I actually plan on locs when it gets long enough, anyway, but either way I'm going with the voices of experience.
My DH, MIL, and Peanut's firstmom (all are AA) have told me I cannot cut his hair before he's one. I'm not sure if that's a cultural thing or a regional/cultural thing. I checked it out with some co-workers who agree with them. Peanut's hair is more like Arose's son. Peanut is 11 months old, and as much as I wanted to cut it before, now I'm dreading it a little. He's gonna look so different (and like a little boy, not my baby.:( )
I waited until my son was 1. He had alot of growth on top but was still almost bald on the sides when it was cut. He looked soo much older to me once I cut his hair :(
We were not allowed to cut our son's hair until after he was adopted, which was just a few days after he turned 1. And the barber didn't want to touch it before that - although I begged him to just even it out a little and he agreed. (Our SW pretended not to notice.) D's hair by that time was very long and thick, but very uneven. Much longer and thicker on top than on the sides and back. He got his hair cut the day after his adoption was finalized and I was very happy to have it cut short!

DS #1 was almost 2 and DS #2 was 4 months. Their hair is so different from each other. Now they both gets cuts once a month.
I think it must be a regional cultural thing because my family (AA) up north keeps telling us that DS needs a haircut (he's almost 7 months old). I'm not sure what we'll do, but I have no plans to cut it yet (even though it needs to be evened out in the back).
I wouldn't even say it is a regional thing... it's more of a family specific thing. We waited until age 1 but I know families who say 6 months, 2 years or even up to 4 years old. It could just be tradition or steeped in superstition. Some people have timelines tied to the individual child and they don't cut until the hair has finishing changing texture if that child has hair that will change texture.
My son was 7 months when we got his hair trimmed. I really wanted to wait until he was a year old, but his hair was just looking silly! He lost all of his hair on the sides and the back, but the top was very thick and long. It looked like he had a mohawk. So, we just had the top scissor trimmed.
Some of my AA friends said it is typical to wait a year for a haircut, but they were referring to a very short cut, not a trim. Most barbers in our area will not cut a child's hair (meaning clipper short) until the child is one, but a trim is okay.
