Why is the discovery, search and reunion process so hard?

I discovered two half siblings later in life. The search and reunion with one has been successful. The other is a dead end? I have asked myself countless times why we all face such an uphill battle with something so basic...primal even. As a psychology graduate student, I have designed a study and am in the process of collecting data on the unique phenomenon surrounding the discovery of, and search for and reunion with surprise/secret siblings.
