Would some of you offer me some inspiration? My city has had a number of small toy shops close in recent years and I just can never seem to find things I'm happy with at Toys'R'Us. My son will be 5 in a month. He likes the usual stuff - Cars, Transformers, Spiderman because those are marketed EVERYWHERE. So he's asked for those kinds of toys for his birthday. But I want to branch out and get something that will get his imagination going. My mom recently got both my boys some backyard bug hunting toys (bug vacuum, field guide, compass, magnifying glass, a belt to hang all their equipment on, etc). They both LOVE that stuff though it never would have occurred to them to ask for it.
So what are your recommendations for a really quality toy brand/company or online toy store?
Thanks!
:)
I love amazon. You can find anything and everything on there. I usually look and see what their sales are. I am seriously addicted to it. My only problem is I buy horribly inappropriate toys for little man that are much to old for him. I also can't seem to get size right when I buy him clothes.

I like Educational Toys, Games and Specialty Toys - Buy Online at Fat Brain Toys for a lot of online gifts for children.
I've ordered from them several times and have never had an issue with their process or items. One of the things I also like about this company is they tell you where a lot of their products are made.
I like YoYo.com: Best Toys, Games, Books, Video Games, Music - Free Shipping. It has great toys and they have free 2 day shipping if you spend a certain amount. I have ordered from them multiple times and it always works out great. They have coupon codes for 1st time customers which are usually 20% off.

I just wanted to suggest a gift that is really fun for kids that age...a butterfly habitat. You purchase the home, then you order your 'butterflies'. The kids get to watch as they change from chrysalis to butterfly. It is really neat and kids around his age love it!

How neat!! I might do this with my kids even though they are older. They are outside/nature kids in many ways and would enjoy the whole scientific aspect to it.
And can I say, it's much better than an ant farm...;) LOL!

It really is cool and it's inexpensive. I was just looking at the habitat in one of my 3 year old classrooms...so cool!

We have purchased from here too. They have these cool logic games- one is called Castle Logix and my 3 1/2 year old loves it. She can only do the beginner levels though so a 5 year old might still be challenged by the higher levels- or they have other similar games for older kids.
The best deals are usually on amazon, in my experience...I use Amazon price tracker, Amazon price history charts, price watches, and price drop alerts. | camelcamelcamel.com to track prices... it shows you the price history of the item in the last year, and you can set it up to send you an alert when the item goes below a certain price... but they often have items up to 40% off and free shipping with prime (or with $25) so it's worth checking there first.
You can check out Barnes and Noble too, they often have great sales on toys and free shipping over $25. I like yoyo too but I try never to pay full price for anything so I only use it when they have a good coupon.
For stores, toys'r us can really be worth it when they have buy one get one free sales. I usually just keep an eye on their flyer and buy ahead when they have one (online really sucks though, even if you have shoprunner for free 2 day shipping, most of the sale items don't qualify). Or Kohls can be a great deal too when they have a 40% sale and a coupon (usually 20%, or you can get 30% if you're a card member). Their prices are inflated though so you rarely get a great deal even if it's a 40% off without a coupon.
Of course some things are never on sale anywhere :( But I mostly buy things on sale at this point...
On a side note... cars, spiderman etc are great for imagination too. My kids make up the craziest stuff using about anything. My son is really into Imaginext toys right now.

I second Fat Brain. Its my go to toy store. I also like the Discovery Channel Store Toys and Games | Top Rated | Discovery Kids
Well, I started this thread and then got really busy for two days .
Thank you so much everyone! I'll be checking out your suggestions tonight.
I end up getting a lot from Amazon myself. And I think they are great when I already know (more or less) what I'm looking for. But I have trouble browsing for ideas there - I get sidetracked way too easily I guess!
I love the butterfly habitat idea. My son's preschool class actually has one of those in the works right now - they may start seeing butterflies emerge tomorrow actually. He is SO excited about it. He would probably love another one of those for his birthday. Or something along those lines.
Thanks!
:)
If you want to do something similar without repeating the butterfly experience, you can also get a ladybug habitat. He can see a different type of metamorphosis with that set. Check out Insect Lore - Live Caterpillars, Butterflies, Insects and Gifts

Thanks Oak! Great site. And I would love a few ladybugs around my yard anyway :) So I may just do that!
