HI. I just joined this site. I recently found out that I am adopted. I am 43 years old. My adopted parents never told me. My adopted mother passed away 2 years ago and my Dad is still living. I have not mentioned to him that I know. I feel that if they did not want to tell me and now that I have found out on my own, that I would not say anything to my Dad. I am looking for my birth certificate. I had one when I got married but I can not locate it now. I need some direction as to where I can obtain one. I found out the hospital I was born, thats about it. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Geraldine
Hi Geraldine,
You can obtain a copy of your birth certificate from your state's vital records department. Your nickname is brooklynpip, so were you perhaps born in New York? If so, check out this site: Birth Certificates - New York State Department of Health
Different states have different rules, but if New York is anything like my home state of Minnesota, your birth certificate will only list your adoptive parents. Minnesota offers the ability to obtain one's original birth certificate, but I don't know if New York does that.
Maybe someone familiar with New York's regulations has a suggestion?

Well, unfortunatley if you do go to your states records dept to get your birth certificate it will list your adoptive parents and not your biological ones. However, if you can figure out what agency you were adopted through they would have your "original" birth certificate filed away, since it obviously sounds like a closed adoption. Then, in order for you to get identifing info the agency would have to contact them and get their permission. At least that is what happend with me sort of.
I had contacted the agency for medical info. Because my youngest was really sick, and not having a history is frustrating, and I did not want my 3 yr old going through unnecessary testing. When I called they informed me that she had contacted with current info. Well, I didn't want to meet her. It took me a long time, about 3 yrs, and I finally agreed and signed the paperwork allowing them to release my id. Info.
Now, I did not have to pay anything, but my brother who was adopted through Catholic Charities was asked to pay, so you may need to prepare for that as well.
I would def say you need to start with the agency if you can get that info of course, and go from there. I will also say that mine was very interested in getting us together.
I wish you the best of luck
