Hi All,
I am really hoping that someone can shed some light on my confused brain. I know that I m probably making this harder than it has to be but...... Could someone please explain to me the differences between an Adoption Agency and a Adoption Facilitator? When my parents were granted custody of me (never allowed to be legally adopted) they used a private attorney specialized in Adoptions. I could really use the help!
Thanks,
Dy

An agency is a fully licensed organization that is authorized by the state to do adoptions. They typically provide training, home studies, counseling for the birth parents and other adoption related services in addition to finding homes for babies/children. They may be non-profit or profit oriented. A facilitator is someone who matches expectant parents with adoptive parents for a fee. They are likely not licensed, though some states have rules and regulations. Depending on the facilitator, they may or may not provide any additional services beyond the match. Different states have varying laws on who is allowed to provide adoption services and some states do not allow facilitators. Many facilitators are based in California. Some are really caring and ethical, others may not be from what I've read. Regardless of which way you go, you will still need an adoption attorney to handle the legal work. Some attorneys also provide adoption matching services where allowed by the state.

Thank you for the reply! That is what I was under the impression also. I am located in a semi-rural, semi- secluded area of California. We are going to use the attorney's firm that handled my case (years and years ago) for the finalization and such. I am just unsure of who to use to help us through the process. So I am doing my homework and researching and trying to find, read and absorb as much as possible.
Thank you again!
